Apathy
Apathy. Disdain. Indifference.
I am not talking about my own feelings, but about a bad energy that I notice in the new generations.
Much is said about the Millenials, and of so-called "Third World" countries, where subsidies are at the order of the day and young people feel entitled to receive.
At some point in our recent history of humanity we made a huge mistake. At some point those of us who are already over 30 years of age we focused too much on our own problems and stopped thinking about what we leave behind. At some point we stopped caring.
Obviously, I'm not talking about all 30+, and I'm not talking about all the young people, if the shoe fits, wear it. But it is very noticeable the neglect as a society as a whole.
At some point, the old politicians instilled that doing politics was to change the world. But they never instilled the value of effort, of work. They never taught that everyone can change the world and get the best of himself even in the simplest ways. That helping someone cross the street is spectacular, because it shows interest in the other, but that going to work dignifies, and the feeling of accomplishment by putting the bread on the table, or financially helping your parents is a unique feeling.
Do you know why? Because in a way we are more functional to some people not reaching our goals nor having the power of decision over our lives. Through the non-valuing of the effort it is very difficult to achieve goals in life and economic, physical and mental independence. When you only have access to basic jobs, where effort is not required, all you can do is survive (if you even get there). Why should I strive if I can win something without too much work and the rest I can demand from the society that owes it to me for the simple fact that I exist?
Do you know how many young people drop out of ComIT courses because they are difficult, demanding, etc.? Do you know how many leave the last few days because they do not get to finish the final project they must develop for their own benefit to show in an interview and get a well paid job? It is easier to abandon, because of the knowledge I have acquired is enough(without the final project), but without understanding that this is not a differential, that there are thousands of people who obtained other knowledge, and you have nothing to show, no experience.
Do you know how many young people drop out after one or two classes? It's a free course, so what's the trouble for me to quit? Nothing, just the rest of what you will do in your life. To break the cycle of government subsidies, nongovernmental assistance (NPOs that teach them to make hamburgers at McDonalds or replenish breads in supermarkets), if I can subsist and ask for the rest. Society owes me.
And again, it is not only in Argentina, Chile, Bolivia, Uruguay or Peru ...
It happens all over the world. How many projects are out there dedicated to people who are not taking them? How many billions of dollars are spent on projects dedicated to self-improvement that fail completely because there are no people willing to improve themselves?
The truth bleeds my soul when I start to blow some of the dust on the surface. We are all very comfortable in the way the world works and few see that we are only on the path to a situation of inequality, hatred and constant loss of values.
If I can continue contributing my bit to help 10 people a year who are willing to change, perfect. The others, please, I ask you to move away from me, so that I can invest my resources in those willing to make the effort, because this was how my parents taught me.
